Here’s the untouched version of this week’s cover image. Jaemi was photographed at the Drexel Autonomous Systems Lab, a robotics laboratory on the first floor of the Bossone building located on 31st and Market Streets in Philadelphia.

It was cold. There was fire. There was water. There was expensive equipment. There was the citypaper honor box. And there was the cast of Brat Productions’ Bald Soprano. Our senior editor Patrick Rapa poked a little fun at me in this week’ Editor’s letter, but this shoot was one of the more stressful ones. Happy it’s over, and please no more fires. I know, I know. It’s been a while and I’ve been REAL busy and it’s been a hot minute since I’ve paid you any attention, dear photoblog. But I’m back and will attempt to fill in the posts that I’ve missed since I left for the Philippines (!!!!). Since then, I’ve got promoted to full-time at Citypaper, and am proudly the staff photographer and web editor. Doesn’t that sound yummy? Anyway…

Cover Story Outtakes: Brian Sanders Fringe Cover

A lot went into the making of this week’s cover, including diving into the Logan Fountain with performer/dancer/choreographer Brian Sanders of JUNK. The cover was decided for its representation of Life Arts / Fringe as a whole: somewhat in your face, wet, awkward and fun. The inspiration for Saunders on the cover also comes from his Urban Scuba show.
To light him in all the shots, I used two Speedlights set up wirelessly. One aimed above for overall light and one closely aimed to the side (held by my wonderful Art Director/Assistant). I don’t think the cover does the actual photo justice. So check out some outtakes from the shoot. Don’t forget to pick it up in print this week. More photos after the jump.
